Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 unit double pie crust
  • 3 pounds variety of apples
  • 2 pcs lemons juiced
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter
  • 0.5 cup granulated sugar
  • 0.5 cup light brown sugar packed
  • 0.25 cup water
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Method

Preparation Steps
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and spray a 9-inch pie plate with nonstick cooking spray.
  2. On a floured surface, roll out one pie crust slightly larger than the pie plate.
  3. Lay the bottom crust over the pie plate and trim edges as needed.
  4. Slice apples and toss with lemon juice in a large bowl.
  5. Add apple slices to the pie plate and set aside.
  6. In a large saucepan, combine butter, sugars, water, flour, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, and vanilla. Stir well.
  7. Cook over medium-high heat until the mixture gently boils, then simmer for 4 minutes.
  8. Remove from heat and reserve 0.25 cup of sauce; pour remaining sauce over apples.
  9. Roll out the second crust into strips for lattice top.
  10. Weave the strips over the apples to create a lattice pattern.
  11. Slowly pour the reserved sauce over the lattice crust, brushing or spooning as needed.
  12. Bake the pie on a sheet pan for 45-60 minutes, or until crust is golden and bubbling inside.
  13. If edges brown too quickly, tent with foil, removing foil 5 minutes before baking ends.
  14. Cool completely before slicing. Serve with vanilla ice cream if desired.

Notes

For best results, use a mixture of tart and sweet apples. To prevent overflow, bake on a sheet pan.
