  • 1 box devil's food chocolate cake mix
  • 1.5 cups cherry Dr. Pepper
  • 10 oz maraschino cherries remove stems from 15 cherries
  • 2 sticks butter softened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 0.25 cup chocolate shavings store bought or using a vegetable peeler

Method
 

Preparation Steps
  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Spray a 9x13-inch baking dish with baking spray.
  3. Remove stems from 15 cherries, slice in half, then in half again, and set aside for garnish.
  4. Mix cake mix and cherry Dr. Pepper using a stand or handheld mixer on low speed until combined, do not add water, eggs, or oil.
  5. Stir in sliced cherries with a large spoon.
  6. Pour batter into prepared baking dish and bake for 28 minutes, until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Cool completely.
  7. Cream softened butter and reserved cherry juice with an electric mixer on medium speed.
  8. Add powdered sugar gradually to the creamed mixture until firm frosting consistency is achieved. Adjust with more sugar if needed.
  9. Spread frosting evenly over cooled cake.
  10. Gently score serving sizes and place a stemmed cherry in the middle of each piece for garnish.
  11. Refrigerate cake for 30 minutes to 1 hour to set frosting.
  12. Garnish with chocolate shavings or scrape chocolate with a vegetable peeler and sprinkle on top.
