Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 pound frozen tater tots half of a 32 ounce/2 pound bag (Ore-Ida brand used)
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter melted
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0.25 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Sour cream
  • Finely chopped chives

Method

Preparation Steps
  1. Preheat oven to 425°F.
  2. Spread out the frozen tater tots onto a large ungreased baking sheet, leaving space between each for even crisping.
  3. Bake the tater tots for 10 minutes.
  4. While baking, make the butter mixture by stirring melted butter, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder in a small bowl.
  5. Remove the tater tots from oven. Using a small flat-bottomed glass, gently smash each tot to ¼ inch thickness, applying light pressure.
  6. Brush each smashed tot with the melted butter mixture using a pastry brush.
  7. Return to oven and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes until golden and crispy. Monitor to prevent burning.
  8. Allow to cool slightly on the baking sheet before serving. Serve topped with sour cream and chopped chives if desired.

Notes

For extra flavor, sprinkle with grated cheese or your favorite spices before baking.
